Summary
This article provides information on how unit standards fit into the Gateway programme, and the purpose of the Unit Standard report.
It also includes information on the report's due date, and how to report unit standards for learners.
The Gateway programme and unit standards
The Gateway programme includes structured workplace learning, ie, a formal arrangement in an actual workplace for a sustained period of time.
The purpose is to provide learners with opportunities to develop knowledge and skills required for future employment, by achieving unit standards (credit achievements).
Unit standards achieved on the Gateway programme count towards all relevant NZQA qualifications regardless of the reporting body, ie, the credits may go towards qualifications on:
- the New Zealand Qualifications and Credentials Framework (NZQCF), or
- the National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA).
What is the purpose of Gateway Unit Standard Actuals report?
The Unit Standard reporting template is used to record the unit standards (credit achievements) that learners have achieved while on the Gateway programme.
We use credit achievement in the Unit Standard report to measure learner success. The report also allows us to monitor school performance in delivering Gateway, and to inform future allocation of Gateway places.
The credit achievement expectation for Gateway is an average achievement of at least 20 credits per learner, on the NZQCF (New Zealand Qualification and Credentials Framework).
When is the Unit Standard report due?
The Unit Standard report only needs to be submitted once a year. It is due by the last Friday in February (in the year following delivery).
The 'Gateway Unit Standard Results – Actuals’ reporting template will be available on your school's DXP Ngā Kete in Term 1. We will email you to advise when it has been uploaded.
How do I fill in the reporting template?
We encourage you to continually update the template throughout the year, as and when learners achieve their unit standards.
To help you fill in the data required, see the Notes section in the reporting template.
In summary:
- For each learner, record the NSN, placement start date, Unit Standard ID, and Vocational Pathway (available as pre-set dropdown options).
- Use a separate row to record each unit standard a learner achieves, and include the learner's information (as in the bullet point above) in each row.
- You can copy and paste the NSN into the number of rows required for the number of units achieved.
- Check that you are only reporting results for learners that are included on your school's 'Gateway Actuals' template.
- Remember to complete the Attestation tab before submitting the report.
FAQs on reporting unit standards/credits and placement dates
Q. Which unit standards do I record on the template?
Only report unit standards that:
- form part of a cohesive learning plan, for example:
- health and safety unit standards that support a learner’s plumbing work placement, or
- media studies achievement standards based on a learner’s placement with a local newspaper
- have been achieved on courses delivered by tertiary education organisations (TEOs) if they meet the circumstances described in the 'Courses' section of the Gateway Handbook. You can find the handbook on Gateway schools | TEC website and Gateway | TEC website.
- Do not include module results for courses delivered by a TEO.
Q. Which unit standards do I not record on the template?
Do not include unit standards that:
- the learner did not achieve
- the learner would have achieved without participating in the Gateway programme
- credits achieved through other funded initiatives (such as STAR, Trades Academies, or 3+2)
- module results for courses delivered by a tertiary education organisation (TEO).
Q. Do the placement start dates in the Unit Standard report need to match the start dates in the Actuals report?
For data integrity, please ensure that learners' placement start dates match those in the Actuals report.
